The story of the Inhambane Tourism Association (ITA) is one of resilience, innovation, and community spirit. It’s a tale deeply rooted in the heart of this region, where untouched shores and historic charm have captivated visitors for centuries.

The Journey Begins in October 1993

It all started with an adventurous expedition to Inhambane, Mozambique, in October 1993. Our destination was BarraBeach, a serene coastline etched in the memories of my friend, Loot Schultz. Loot, who had navigated Mozambique during the war, vividly recalled a shipwreck on the point, adding intrigue to our journey.

Our arrival at Barra Beach Mozambique was met with challenges. Overgrown tracks made access nearly impossible, forcing us to camp at Tofo Beach Mozambique, where the only resident was Nordine. The next day, we persevered and reached Barra Beach, where some of us slept under the stars—only to wake up covered in palm fly bites.

Despite these challenges, I was drawn to Barra’s untouched beauty. While exploring, I found a spot that seemed perfect for a fishing lodge. Capturing its 360-degree splendor in photos, I didn’t yet know that this very location would become home to Barra Lodge, one of the region’s most iconic accommodations.

Building Barra Lodge: A Pioneer’s Dream

Six months later, I returned with my son John and my trusty Old Army Bedford truck. We set up a modest camp beneath coconut trees, crafting a home in this coastal paradise. Drawing on my experience living in the Botswana bush, we created comforts such as a hot and cold shower—a rare luxury in the midst of this untouched wilderness.

My vision was clear: to build a lodge with a beachfront restaurant, self-catering cottages, and cozy casitas for visitors seeking the tranquillity of Mozambique’s beaches. However, as the first to undertake such a development, navigating Mozambique’s bureaucratic processes proved daunting. It took three years of perseverance before any tangible progress could be made.

Establishing Tourism in Inhambane

Support came from key figures like Inhambane’s Mayor, Takadur, and Tourism Director, Jorge Furgao. Together, we overcame countless challenges to lay the foundation for tourism in the region. During this time, other South Africans, including Barry Dowson, Allan Liversage, and fisherman Arthur Cochrane in Tofo Mozambique, began arriving to join the effort.

In those early days, we were a small group of settlers determined to make Inhambane thrive. We would gather at Tik Tik, Inhambane’s only restaurant, to share ideas over cold beers. Recognising the power of collaboration, I proposed we unite under one organisation to address our shared challenges. This led to the creation of the Inhambane Tourism Association(ITA).

Founding the Inhambane Tourism Association

The ITA officially formed with the support of founding members, including myself, Dave Law, along with Barry Dowson, Allan Liversage, Eric Smith, and others like Dick de Villiers and Paul Greyling. Monthly meetings allowed us to coordinate efforts, tackling issues like harassment by traffic police and the lack of infrastructure for tourism in Inhambane Mozambique.

Our influence grew rapidly. Annual seminars brought together government officials, tourism stakeholders, and community leaders to discuss the future of Mozambique tourism. These events cemented the ITA’s role as a vital link between local authorities and the tourism industry, driving progress and promoting the region as a top destination.

The Legacy of Tourism in Inhambane

Through our efforts, Inhambane transformed into a hub for eco-tourism, diving enthusiasts, and culture seekers. Today, visitors flock to destinations like Tofo Beach, Barra Beach, and the Bazaruto Archipelago, drawn by their unparalleled beauty and vibrant marine life.

Whether you’re here to explore the rich history of Inhambane Town, relax on Mozambique’s idyllic beaches, or dive with whale sharks and manta rays, Inhambane offers an unforgettable experience. The legacy of the ITA lives on, shaping the region as a beacon of tourism and cultural exchange.

–
